The Wii U is largely considered a commercial failure. I personally loved the Wii U and thought it was a great console but it wasn't a success for Nintendo. However, the Nintendo Switch is clearly a major success for Nintendo and has nearly made the Wii U's lifetime sales in it's first year. It's clear that Nintendo is moving on to their next console as they always do. However, Nintendo seems to be trying to make everyone forget that the Wii U ever happened. What I mean by this is that they are just making the Switch the definitive version of the Wii U. It's more of what the Wii U should have been instead of being a new console. Nintendo is porting over most of the Wii U games to this 'new and improved version of the console' ruining the Wii U's legacy as most people will now remember these as Nintendo Switch games.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the last big game on the Wii U and was also released on the Switch
Mario Kart 8 - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - being released for Switch in May
Bayonetta 1 & 2 - On the Switch!
Splatoon 2 - Splatoon 1
Pokkén Tournament - Pokkén Tournament DX
Even third parties with Shovel Knight and Rayman Legends are just bringing their best games from the Wii U to this superior console.
It probably makes sense for Nintendo to release these games on the Switch and I've said before that some of these games I'm happy have came to Switch as more people will get to play these great games. My problem is that the Wii U will be looked down by most as a bad Nintendo console. The NES was their first console, the SNES and Nintendo 64 still hold up today and feel nostalgiac to most people, the Gamecube sold quite poorly for Nintendo but still has a great catalogue of games that, for the most part, remained exclusively on the Gamecube and weren't just all moved over to the Wii, the new superior console, the Wii, their best selling home console has changed Nintendo's target market to everyone as opposed to just gamers but the Wii U is considered Nintendo's first major failure. Many gamers began to think of Nintendo consoles as less serious and more childish. Maybe in the future, the Wii U will be looked down as an amazing console but the Switch seems to be acting as more of a replacement than a successor.
